Testudo is a genus of tortoise still living in North America, Asia and Europe. These three adult Testudo were found together in a burrow. This is indicative of a behavior known as brumation, wherein reptiles enter a hibernation-like state. Digging a burrow allowed the tortoise to avoid freezing and provided shelter. In the burrow they would enter a period of deep rest and inactivity, an important factor for their health and growth.
