Mesohippus sp. Skull - Solid Color Replica
Mesohippus was an early genus of horse from the Oligocene. This three-toed horse reached a size of about 2 feet (0.6 m) in height and 3 feet (0.9 m) in length. Mesohippus had low crowned teeth that would have been well suited to browsing leaves from bushes and small trees, and is therefore thought to be a forest dweller. Its long tail was over 1/4 its total body length. An interesting note is that all known North American horses including Mesohippus had 17 thoracic vertebrae, while European horses had 18.
Solid Color Replicas are unmounted casts suitable for research or reference purposes. It is painted a single color.
Note: some portions of the original fossil may have been scientifically restored.
